Human Life Advancement Foundation Science & Technology Scholarships

The Human Life Advancement Foundation (HLAF) is the newly established foundation active in the fields of the education, technology transfer and sustainable development in developing world. Our mission is to develop networks of organizations and individuals able and willing to contribute to the needs of society, as well as in the development of internationally competent individuals. HLAF aspires to become a reference point for creation of knowledge, innovations and technology transfer related issues in developing countries. We support the importance of education in building a knowledge society.

This foundation strives to be an innovative institution responsive to needs of society for innovations, knowledge and technology by supporting fruitful interaction between firms, academia and public sector. We are delighted to announce that we are offering scholarships to those pursuing PhD studies and Posdoctoral research.

Applicants are invited from outstanding postgraduate students at PhD level or Postdoctoral researchers for the award of PhD scholarships funded by Human Life Advancement Foundation.

    Institutions that have networking with HLAF may recommend PhD students/Posdoctoral researchers to apply for HLAF Science & Technology Scholarship by submitting details of the applicants as below toscholarship@hlaf.org.my

    Please provide Person in Charge of the Institution’s email and other contact details to us and applicants.Person in Charge of the Institution will be named as one of the referees when applying for the scholarship.Applicants have to apply the scholarship ONLINE (see “Procedure For Application”).
  • Project support by submitting proposal to HLAF.
    The Foundation may grant the Scholarship Award as support for any specific project that is suitable for the scholarship. Institutions within HLAF network may submit proposal for the project to scholarship@hlaf.org.my. Agreement document will be signed between HLAF and the Institution for the supported project and applicants have to apply the scholarship ONLINE. Please provide Person in Charge of the Institution’s email and other contact details to us and applicants. Person in Charge of the Institution will be named as one of the referees when applying for the scholarship.The evaluation for application under project support might not follow the evaluation scheduled below.

Application Duration

  • For individual application or through institution within HLAF networks 15th April until 15th June each year.
  • Application for project support all year round, no deadline.

Scholarship Evaluation

  • For individual application or through institution within HLAF networks July/August

Preferred Discipline for Scholarship includes:

  • Any field of study that supports innovation and technology.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Nationality : Unrestricted
  • Gender : Unrestricted
  • Maximum age :
    • 30 years for posgraduate student at PhD level
    • 35 years for postdoctoral researchers
  • Have received acceptance (offer) letter to pursue PhD/Postdoctoral at recognized universities before final decision on scholarship is taken.
  • In excellent health condition and certified by a Certified Doctor/Medical Professional. The cost of medical examination is to be borne by the applicants
  • All applicants should have a score of at least 550 in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or 6.0 points in the International English Language Testing Services (IELTS) or score a band 4 in Malaysian University English Test (MUET)or excellent result in other relevant English test that is accepted by the university and equivalent to the tests mentioned above.

Minimum Academic Achievement

  •  Strong academic record and excellent academic references. Obtained a minimum of Second Class Upper (Honours) or a CGPA of 3.5/4.0 at Bachelor Degree and must possess CGPA 3.8/4.0 or very good result at Masters Degree level in a similar field of intended PhD study, strong publication record.
     
  •  For Postdoctoral candidate strong academic record at PhD study and the research topics to be carried out will have an added advantage.

 

Selection Criteria

Applications will be considered according to the following selection criteria :-

PhD

  • Academic achievement at previous study;
  • Publication record;
  • The quality of the SOP and research proposal;
  • Recommendation letters;
  • Excellent communication, writing and reading skills in English Language.

Post doctorate

  • Academic achievement at PhD study;
  • Publication record;
  • Research proposal and its perspective application;
  • Recommendation letters;
  • Organization in which he/she will have its postdoctoral research;
  • Excellent communication, writing and reading skills in English Language.

Procedure For Application

Application can be made ONLINE at www.hlaf.my
Steps:
  • Sign up as member.
  • Go to “HLAF Programs” and click “Scholarship Application
  • Fill in details required and attach documents as below:
    -Identification Document / Passport
    -University Acceptance / Admission / Offer Letter
    -Research Proposal
    -Academic Transcript
    -CV with publication list
    -English proficiency test result
    -References related to the relevant study
    -Any other necessary documents
  • These documents are compulsory. Please name the files attached as above.
  • If you are applying through i) Institution within HLAF networks, orii) Project support by having an agreement with HLAF please name the Person in Charge of the Institution as one of the referees
  • Click “Submit this application” on the “summary” tab. You cannot edit any information after you submitted the application.
It is your responsibility to provide correct and certified supporting documentation. We will not consider your application if you do not provide the correct documentation. Late applications will not be accepted. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified for interview. HLAF is not under any obligation whatsoever to call any candidate for interview.

  1. To encourage Doctoral & Postdoctoral research, Human Life Advancement Foundation offers scholarships to those about to begin their PhD and Post-doctoral research. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to local and international students and researcher in any discipline that supports technology and innovations.
  2. Human Life Advancement Foundation Scholarships will consist up to USD 15,000 per annum for PhD students and up to USD35,000 per annum for Postdoctoral researcher stipend including tuition fees for four years.
  3. The Scholarships are offered to the top ranked candidates in any PhD and Post-doctoral admission. To be considered for a Human Life Advancement Foundation Scholarship the applicant must have
    • a strong academic record and excellent academic references, or
    • a demonstrated potential for high quality research; or
    • a very good publication record.
    Other considerations may be taken into account such as the alignment between the applicant’s research interests and those of the School, Institute or Centre. Strategic interests including collaboration between institutions or research involving potential joint initiatives with the research and business communities may also be factors in determining offers of scholarship.
  4. (i)The effective date of the Scholarship for incoming students/researchers will be the commencement date of the relevant semester or the actual date of registration, whichever is the later. For existing students/researchers who are awarded the Scholarship during their candidature, the effective date of the Scholarship will be from a date as stipulated by the relevant faculty or school.
    (ii) Notwithstanding the above, for students/researchers who are employed as at the time of the award of the Scholarship, the Scholarship will only take effect from the date immediately after he/she has ceased to draw a salary from the employer.
  5. The Scholarship is tenable at any recognised global universities worldwide. As full-time students/reseachers, Scholars are expected to report to their Department of study and/or supervisor at the University during the period of the Scholarship, except during periods of approved leave.
  6. The Scholarship is tenable for one year in the first instance and thereafter may, subject to the Scholar's satisfactory progress report endorsed by the Advisor, which will be renewed each semester at the Foundation’s discretion. The maximum period of the Scholarship is 4 years for PhD candidates and 1 years for Post doctorate, as determined by the Foundation in each case
  7. The Scholar undertakes to devote his/her full time and energy to his/her studies and to the best of his/her ability, apply himself/herself to his/her programme of study, to the satisfaction of the University and the Foundation. Scholarship recipients shall be required to maintain full time enrolment and devote themselves full-time to their programme of research during the tenure of the scholarship and may not hold a position of emolument in addition to the work experience component of this scholarship without prior approval of the Foundation. All requests to undertake part-time employment must be supported in writing by the supervisor(s) and/or Head of School to be submitted the Foundation.
  8. The Scholar may not accept employment, whether or not he/she is remunerated, or hold concurrently any other scholarship, fellowship, allowance or other award during the period of the Scholarship, without the prior approval of the Foundation. In addition, the Scholar cannot change to a programme of study different from that stated in his/her offer of admission letter or take up any additional course(s) without the prior written permission of the Foundation.
  9. Tuition fees will be paid on confirmation of enrolement and on the presentation of the fees assessment documentation to the foundationOnce the period of tenure of a scholarship has commenced, the Foundation may, grant a scholarship recipient a suspension of their scholarship for a period not exceeding six months or a total of twelve months during the first three years of registration.
  10. A scholarship shall be terminated if a scholarship receipient ceases to resume the aforesaid programme of the research within one month of the last day of the period of the suspension.
  11. The scholarship recipient must complete six monthly reports (1 Semester) outlining their progress to date approved by the Advisor and ensures that copies of these reports are submitted to the Foundation.
  12. The Foundation may at any time suspend or terminate a scholarship, or require the forfeiture of such proportion of the scholarship emolument as it may determine, if the scholarship recipient is not diligently pursuing their programme of research and is not making satisfactory progress, has violated the University Statute on Conduct, or has failed to comply with any of the terms and conditions on which the scholarship was awarded
  13. At the discretion of the Foundation, the application of any of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified or relaxed in special circumstances or in order to avoid hardship to any scholarship recipient or misuse of the scholarship funding
  14. The Foundation shall review these Terms and Conditions from time to time

  1. What is the primary objective of HLAF Science and Technology Scholarships?
    The HLAF Science and Technology Scholarships aims for the development of technology and innovation by providing scholarships for candidates to pursue PhD level studies or Postdoctoral research. We support the importance of education in building a educated society.
  2. Who is eligible for HLAF Science and Technology Scholarships?
    All applicants with any citizenship at the maximum age of 35 years for full time Postdoctoral researchers and maximum of 30 years for postgraduate PhD students.

    Received at least offer letter(s) to pursue Doctorate Degree or Postdoctoral research. It is a merit-based scholarship, and will be awarded based on academic excellence, participation in extracurricular activities and active involvement in the industry. HLAF awards scholarships primarily on the basis of the proposal and interview.
  3. What are the areas of study covered by HLAF Science and Technology Scholarships?
    The scholarships are for PhD students and Postdoctoral researchers from any field of study that supports innovation and technology.
  4. What is the value of HLAF Science and Technology Scholarships?
    The scholarship value will depend on the type of study, as determined by HLAF. The Scholarship value will be up to USD 15,000 per annum for PhD students and up to USD 35,000 per annum for Postdoctoral researchers.

    Yes. Scholars might be needed to help or assistance to the activities of the Foundation.
  9. How do overseas scholars fund the balance cost not covered by the scholarship?
    Given that the scholarship for overseas study only cover partial total course amount, scholars are encouraged to pursue other forms of bursaries, loans, grants from other organizations or financial assistance from family to support the balance cost as long as it does not compete with the rights of our scholarship.

    No, applicants are required to submit their application based on their preferred university and course of study.
  4. What happens if I have not secured a place in any university?
    We require applicants to show evidence of acceptance from their institution of choice and that they have satisfied the conditions of entry prior to being offered the scholarship.
  5. Can I appeal your decision if I am not shortlisted?
    All decisions on the selection of scholarship awards are final.

  1. To encourage postgraduate research Human Life Advancement Foundation offers scholarships to those about to begin their doctoral studies. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to local and international students in any discipline that supports technology and innovations.
  2. Human Life Advancement Foundation Scholarships from 2012 will consist of $USD 15,000 per annum stipend including tuition fees for up to four years. However, recipient is free to contribute to the academic life of the School in which they undertake study.
  3. The Scholarships are offered to the top ranked candidates in any Doctoral admission. To be considered for a Human Life Advancement Foundation Scholarship the applicant must have
    • a strong academic record and excellent academic references, or
    • a demonstrated potential for high quality research; or
    • a record of publication in high quality journals commensurate with experience and education.
    Other considerations may be taken into account such as the alignment between the applicant’s research interests and those of the School, Institute or Centre. Strategic interests including collaboration between institutions or research involving potential joint initiatives with the research and business communities may also be factors in determining offers of scholarship.

    The scholarships are for PhD applicants (by research) for any field of study that supports innovation and technology.

    Applicants are required to send scanned copies of their verified documents, certificates or academic transcripts. Shortlisted applicants will need to bring their original documents, certificates and academic transcripts when invited for an interview.
  6. Can I appeal your decision if I am not shortlisted?
    All decisions on the selection of scholarship awards are final.
