Board of Trustee
YBhg Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad
Sheikh Yousef Abdul Latif Jameel
Prof Korkut Ozal
YBhg Tun Mahathir Mohamad

Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad became the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia on 16 July 1981.

He was born on 20 December 1925 in Alor Star, the capital of the state of Kedah and had his primary and secondary education in his hometown.

In 1947 he gained admission into King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore. Upon graduation he joined the Malayan Government Service as a Medical Officer. However, he decided to leave the government service in 1957 to set up his own private practice in Alor Star.

Dr. Mahathir started his involvement in politics as early as in 1945 and became a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) since its inception in 1946.

Dr. Mahathir was first elected as a Member of Parliament in the 1964 General Election. He however failed to defend his seat in the subsequent General Election held in 1969.

Owing to his keen interest in the development of the country’s education, he was appointed the chairman of the first Higher Education council in 1968, followed with a membership in the Higher Education Advisory Council in 1972 and made a member of the University Court and University of Malaya Council as well as the Chairman of the National University Council in 1974.

A year earlier, in 1973, Dr. Mahathir was appointed a Senator. He had to relinquish his Senatorship a year later so as to be eligible to stand as a candidate in the 1974 General Election. In that election, he was returned unopposed.

Fresh from the electoral victory, Dr. Mahathir was appointed as the Minister of Education.

In 1976 Dr. Mahathir political career took another surge forward when was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister. He was also entrusted to assume more responsibilities as he was made the Trade and Industry Ministry while still retaining the Education portfolio.

In UMNO, Dr Mahathir’s career was equally meteoric. He was elected as one of the three Vice-Presidents of UMNO in the party’s polls in 1975. In 1978 he was elected as the party’s Deputy President and in 1981 he assumed the party’s presidency.

He was returned unopposed as party President in 1984 but received a stiff challenge in the 1987 party elections but Dr Mahathir managed to retain his presidency. Dr Mahathir retained the Umno presidency until he decided to step down in 2003.

By virtue of his position as the UMNO president, the leading component in the ruling Barisan Nasional (National Front), Dr Mahathir assumes the chairmanship of the coalition.

Under his leadership, Barisan Nasional won landslide victories in the 1982, 1986, 1990, 1995 and 1999 General Elections.

In 2002, at the height of his popularity, Dr Mahathir shocked the nation when he unexpectedly announced his resignation.

Party and Government leaders demanded that he retracted his resignation but Dr Mahathir was adamant. His colleagues continued to appeal and demand that he change his mind and finally, Dr Mahathir agreed to postpone his resignation to the following year so as to allow for a smooth transition of the nation’s leadership.

On 31 October 2003, Dr Mahathir officially stepped down as Malaysia’s fourth Prime Minister, leaving behind a legacy of 22 years that propelled Malaysia onto the world map.

Dr Mahathir is credited with having turned Malaysia’s economy from being agriculture-reliant to industrial-based and at the same time elevating Malaysia’s position as the 17th biggest trading nation in the world.

He opened the country to foreign investment, reformed taxation, reduced trade barriers, and privatised numerous state enterprises and created a world-class infrastructure.

He sought to bridge Malaysia’s ethnic divides by increasing prosperity. In 1991 he launched Vision 2020 that serves as a blue print for Malaysia’s journey to becoming a developed nation and a mature democracy by the year 2020.

During the Asian financial crisis of 1997/1998, Dr Mahathir resisted the International Monetary Fund (IMF) prescription and broke away from conventions by implementing Malaysia’s very own formula for economic recovery. Malaysia’s recovery has become a model of economic success and a subject for economic students and experts worldwide.

Under Dr Mahathir’s leadership, Malaysia played a prominent role in
the international arena as the voice of developing nations in the international arena. During his tenure Malaysia was made the Chairman of the Organisation
of Islamic Conference and Non-Aligned Movement in 2003.

Known for speaking his mind, Dr Mahathir was named Asia’s Newsmaker of 1998 by the TIME Magazine.

An accomplished writer and a thinker, Dr Mahathir authored several books including the Malay Dilemma, The Way Forward, The Challenge, The Malaysian Currency Crisis and Globalisation and the New Realities to name a few.

Always concerned at the plight of the Muslim Ummah, Dr Mahathir had penned his thoughts in several books that discussed the state of affairs and issues affecting the Muslim world and they included The Role of Islam in The Modern State and Islam and the Muslim Ummah. In 2003, the Malaysian Government declared Dr Mahathir to be “The Father of Modern Malaysia” in recognition of his contribution in turning Malaysia into a modern, advanced and an industrialised nation.

Following his retirement as the Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir was conferred the nation's highest award the Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara that carries the title "Tun" in recognition of his immense contribution to the country.

Tun Dr. Mahathir has also been conferred with many local and international awards.

They included the King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam from Saudi Arabia, the Jawaharlal Nehru Prize for International Understanding from India and the Order of Good Hope Class One and Grand Cross award form South Africa.

Recent awards being conferred included the Honorary Professorship from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines; Honorary Doctorate in Political Science from the Naresuan University in Thailand, the Jubilee Medal in Conjunction of the 20th anniversary of independence of the Kazakhstan Republic; the Linus Pauling Award from the International League of Humanists for Peace and Tolerance from Bosnia Herzegovina and the Gaddafi International Prize for Human Rights.

(The full list of award attached). Despite his retirement, Dr Mahathir has been busy attending to numerous invitations and speaking engagements both locally and abroad.

Currently he serves as Advisor to four national entities, namely Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Berhad (PROTON) Langkawi Island Development Authority and Tioman Island Development Authority.

He is also Honorary President of Perdana Leadership Foundation (PLF) a think-tank and research organisation set up to preserve, develop and disseminate the intellectual heritage of past leaders. He is also the President of the University Petronas and Chairman the new University Perdana.

He is the Founding Chairman of Kuala Lumpur Foundation to Criminalise War and the President of Perdana Global Peace Foundation (PGPO). Both these organisations seek to promote global peace and to criminalise war.
